MCU vs X-men (FOX)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe that is centered on a series of superhero films, independently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. X-Men is an American superhero film series based on the fictional superhero team of the same name, who originally appeared in a series of comic books created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and published by Marvel Comics. 20th Century Fox obtained the film rights to the characters in 1994,

Why compare between MCU and X-men ???

X-men is a group of super-powered ‘mutants’ fighting evil in order to prevent the destruction of the planet. While MCU has superheroes doing same but for the universe. Both qualify as two of the biggest movie franchises around. Of course, residing under the stewardship of two different studios, X-Men movies and Marvel films are actually very different beasts. There are pluses and minuses to the way 20th Century Fox handles the X-Men franchise. And the same for Marvel Studios with MCU. The focus will be on the X-Men films charting the exploits of Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto, and their rivals over at the MCU.
After 11 Marvel films and five X-Men movies, there’s enough evidence to draw.

Continuation to next movie

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a fair few films have felt like mere stepping-stones to the next Marvel joint. Like Iron Man 2 and Thor 2. The X-Men movies, conversely, haven’t been beholden to a grand, multi-phase plan. As such, each film is as important as the next. There have been some fantastic standalone Marvel movies. The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians Of The Galaxy being some of them. But the fact is the X-Men series has benefited more greatly from creatives approaching each film not knowing the plan for the film that’s coming after.

Simple theme of the movie

X-men-first-class gaming is my life
X-Men franchise has a basic set-up – good mutants facing off against bad mutants – that the Marvel movies don’t. Each Marvel movie involves a different set of dynamics. The X-Men movies take less risk by sticking to a template. But it keeps the cast dynamics on a satisfyingly even keel.

Villains are important too…

Loki is Marvel’s best villain to date – charming, conflicted and cunning. But Red Skull, Whiplash, Malekith, Ultron – all of them have been examples of why even great actors can’t enliven a villain if their basic motivation is unclear. In X-Men, as much attention is paid to the bad guy as is paid to the heroes. William Stryker, Sebastian Shaw, and Bolivar Trask are compelling grotesques – all are eugenics advocates. But the real focus has always been on the battle between Prof X and the Magneto with their crew.

Personal attachment to characters

The X-Men movies are more personal, heartfelt visions than the Marvel movies. MCU is often more thematically rich but they have pockets of individuality. X-Men may be a multi-million dollar franchise, but it still feels deeply personal, with the films’ concerns shifting as the real world evolves.

HULK VS HULKBUSTER MCU gaming_is_my_life
Since The Avengers, the ending of every Marvel film has revolved around a gigantic citywide fight. As the immortal heroes attempt to save a city and/or planet from destruction. The MCU tends to go in for the ‘bigger is better’ philosophy. The X-Men movies prefer to retain some form of intimacy and drama in their grand finales. X-Men and X2 both make statements about sacrifice in their climaxes. First Class ends with a tale of brotherhood gone sour. While Days Of Future Past closes Logan’s personal journey with the character seemingly finally settled in a world peacefully. Only one or two have really ended all that satisfyingly in MCU, both dramatically and in terms of execution.

These are my views on the X-men series and on various MCU movies. You may agree or disagree with that.
