Just like all other years, 2017 too has been a great year for us videogamers. Several titles ranging from triple-A open-worlds to indie 2D platformers have been released this year, with games from every genre touching our hearts. Sequels to major titles were released along with new games that immediately received massive amount of praise from fellow gamers.

10.  Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is a tactical shooter video game developed by Ubisoft Paris and published by Ubisoft. The game takes place in Bolivia in July 2019. Players play as members of the Delta Company, First Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, also known as “Ghosts”, a fictional elite special operations unit of the United States Army under the Joint Special Operations Command.

Upon release, the game received generally positive reviews with praise given to the game’s shooting mechanics, visuals, and design of Bolivia. Even before its release, Wildlands was nominated for IGN’s “E3 2015 Game of the Show”, “Best PlayStation 4 Game”, “Best Xbox One Game” and “Best PC Game” awards.

Injustice 2 is a fighting video game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Players compete in one-on-one combat using characters from the DC Universe and other third-party franchises. The game’s storyline centers around Batman and his insurgency’s attempt to restore society after the fall of Superman’s regime in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Injustice 2 received positive reviews from critics, who praised its story, presentation, improved gameplay mechanics, and character customization options. It topped the United Kingdom’s multi-platform physical sales chart during its first two weeks after launch, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions simultaneously taking the first and second spots, respectively. The game won the “Best Fighting Game” awards from The Game Awards 2017 and IGN.

8.  Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, or simply Hellblade, is a dark fantasy psychological horror action-adventure video game developed and published by Ninja  Theory. Inspired by Norse mythology and Celtic Culture, Hellblade follows Senua, a Pict warrior who must make her way to Helheim by defeating otherworldly entities and facing their challenges, in order to rescue the soul of her dead lover from the goddess Hela.

Hellblade was a commercial success and received very positive reviews from video game critics, who praised it as a work of art and applauded its uncommon choice of revolving around psychosis, the quality and uniqueness of its approach of the condition, and its story and main character. At the annual TIGA Awards, the game won the award for “Best Action and Adventure Game”, and received five nominations at The Game Awards 2017, winning “Best Audio Design”, and “Best Performance” for Melina Juergens.

Destiny 2 is an online-only multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie and published by Activision. Set in a mythic science fiction world, the game features a multiplayer shared-world environment with elements of role-playing games. Players assume the role of a Guardian, protectors of Earth’s last safe city as they wield a power called Light to protect the Last City from different alien races.

Upon release, the game received praise from critics for its gameplay, recategorization of weapons, and the newer activities like the “Adventures” and “Lost Sectors”. Destiny 2 won the award for the “Best PC Game” at the 2017 Game Critics Awards and received six nominations at The Game Awards 2017.

6.  Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is an action-adventure first-person shooter video game developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game is the eighth main entry in the Wolfenstein series and the sequel to 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, set in an alternate history 1961 following the Nazi victory of the Second World War. The story follows war veteran William “B.J.” Blazkowicz and his efforts to fight against the Nazi regime in America.

The game was released to a positive critical response with particular praise directed at the characters, the narrative, the shooting mechanics as well as the general presentation. The New Colossus debuted in 4th place in the UK and Australian Sales charts, 5th in the New Zealand Sales charts and 14th in the U.S. sales charts. It was nominated for multiple year-end awards, including nominations at the 35th Annual Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards 2017, the latter in which it received the accolade for “Best Action Game”.

5.  Cuphead

Cuphead is a run and gun indie game developed and published by StudioMDHR. As the title character Cuphead, the player fights a series of bosses in order to repay a debt to the devil.

The game was praised for its art style and noted for its challenging difficulty. Cuphead was both a critical and commercial success, selling over two million copies by the end of 2017. The game won numerous accolades including the “Best Art Direction”, “Best Independent Game”, and “Best Debut Indie Game” at The Game Awards 2017.

4.  Assassin’s Creed Origins

Assassin’s Creed Origins is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The game is set in Egypt during the Ptolemaic period (48 BC) and explores the origins of the centuries-long conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins, who fight for peace by promoting liberty, and The Order of the Ancients—forerunners to the Templar Order—who desire peace through the forced imposition of order. The player takes on the role of a Medjay named Bayek and his wife Aya, as they work to protect the people of the Ptolemaic Kingdom during a time of widespread upheaval.

Origins received positive reviews from critics, who praised the story, characters, voice acting, reworked gameplay systems, immersive world of Egypt and the visuals. Sales of Assassin’s Creed Origins during its first 10 days were 100% higher than Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, while player engagement also saw an increase. The game was nominated for several awards including the “Best Action/Adventure Game” at The Game Awards 2017.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is a multiplayer online battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of Korean publisher Bluehole. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The last player or team standing wins the round.

Battlegrounds’ explosive growth and how it established the battle royale genre was considered to be one of the top trends in the video game industry during 2017. The Steam version had sold over twenty-four million copies and held a peak concurrent player count of nearly three million, making it the most played game on the platform, while the Xbox One version sold over a million copies three days after its release. While still in early access, Battlegrounds won the “Best Multiplayer Game” and was also nominated for the categories “Game of the Year” and “Best Ongoing Game” at The Game Awards 2017.

The story is set in the 31st century, in a world where humans have regressed to primitive tribal societies as a result of some unknown calamity. The plot revolves around Aloy, a hunter and archer, who has been an outcast her whole life, sets out to discover the dangers that kept her sheltered.

At release, the game was well received by critics, who praised the open world, story, visuals, combat, and the character of Aloy. It was the best-selling launch of an original IP on the PlayStation 4 console, selling over three million copies by June 2017, making it the second best-selling PlayStation 4 game. Horizon Zero Dawn won the award for “Best Original Game” at the Game Critics Awards in 2015 and 2016, along with several accolades.

It is a part of The Legend of Zelda series and follows amnesiac protagonist Link, who awakens from a hundred-year slumber to a mysterious voice that guides him to defeat Calamity Ganon before he can destroy the kingdom of Hyrule.

Breath of the Wild received universal acclaim from critics, who deemed it to be one of the greatest video games of all time. The game broke Nintendo’s sales records in numerous regions, with the Switch version of the game far exceeding sales of the Wii U version, selling over four million copies worldwide by September 2017, making it the best-selling game on the system. At The Game Awards 2017, the title received the accolades for “Game of the Year”, “Best Game Direction”, and “Best Action/Adventure Game”, among others.
